As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to escalate, the deadlock in peace negotiations has become even harder to break. In response, former U.S. President Donald Trump has shifted his stance, hinting that he might abandon efforts to mediate the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

On the 8th, Russian authorities confirmed that National Guard Deputy Commander General Strigunov was arrested over corruption and bribery allegations related to the construction of a military training facility in Novosibirsk. He faces charges of bribery and abuse of power and is currently held in Moscow’s Lefortovo detention center.
So far, the Kremlin and President Putin have yet to comment publicly on this incident.
However, just a day prior, Putin attended the “Everything for Victory” forum in Moscow, where he openly spoke of Gudkov’s death, calling him a “true Russian officer” and praising the significant contributions of Russian soldiers during the Ukraine conflict.
In this context, the arrest of a senior military figure on corruption charges deals a blow to Russian troop morale and highlights internal disorder within the military hierarchy.
It is widely acknowledged that after multiple assassinations of Russian officers and officials, suspicions have grown about serious infiltration by hostile forces inside Russia. This internal breach represents a major vulnerability amidst the intensifying conflict.
Now, with the deputy commander’s arrest for bribery, another severe internal crisis is laid bare. If left unresolved, these problems could escalate into even greater risks for Russia.

The third event: Will the U.S. resume aid to Ukraine? Trump signals a warning to Russia.
On the 8th, the Associated Press reported that Trump declared at the White House that the U.S. will continue to send more weapons and equipment to Ukraine to support its self-defense, expressing disappointment that “Putin hasn’t stopped.”
This implies a renewed U.S. commitment to military aid for Ukraine to counter Russia, coupled with Trump’s explicit criticism of Putin.
It is worth noting that on July 1st, the Pentagon confirmed a temporary pause in certain Ukraine aid programs pending review. On July 3rd, Trump stated that aid would continue only if “the U.S. has sufficient weapons.”
However, just one week later, Trump reversed course.
This suggests that the previous halt in aid might have been a strategic facade aimed at encouraging peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. But with the conflict escalating unexpectedly, Trump’s approach has shifted, now signaling support to push Russia back to the negotiation table.
Notably, Russia responded firmly to Trump’s remarks, saying the decision “does not help promote a peaceful resolution” and emphasizing that U.S. arms deliveries to Ukraine have never stopped.
This underscores Russia’s resolute position, unwilling to easily compromise or follow the U.S.-crafted “script” for peace talks.
Besides resuming aid, the U.S. plans new sanctions against Russia, triggering strong objections from Moscow, which views such moves as detrimental to improving bilateral relations.
Clearly, both the Russia-Ukraine conflict and U.S.-Russia relations remain fraught with uncertainties. After more than three years of conflict, how this prolonged war will ultimately conclude remains a mystery.
